As of july 6th Microsoft extended their x-box 360 warenty to 3 years, this also includes a back warenty, so if you purchased your 360 in the last 3 years they will pay to fix it or refund your payment if you happend to pay to get it fixed
if you attemt to "fix it yourself" you will void the warenty.
I am myself a victom of the 360 "red ring of death" or "bricking" and am on my 3rd time around in 6 months. but i still love the system!
90% of the time the issue stems from poor ventalation and over heating. causing the wires to seperate from the board. its a flaw in the system as there is not nearly enough airflow to keep the unit cool.
there are precautions you can take to avoid becomming a victom of the "red ring of death" (otherwise known as "bricking" because it turns you system into a very expensive brick)
1- make sure to keep your 360 in an open area. putting it into a wall unit or bookshelf could reduce the ability for it to stay cool.
2 - never leave the system on over night
3 - if your a hard core gamer, you may want to give the unit a rest after several hours of play.
4 - MOST IMPORTANT ... invest in a cooling unit!!!!
From the moment i got my 360 back form microsoft i went and purchased the external coolers.
I have the system mounted up on a frame and have the madcats cooler (uses its own power source & does not plug into the system) and an introcooler on the back that goes between the power cord and the unit itself. (i dont recomend coolers that are usb, or pull diirectly through the system itself as they can cause the maching to overheat more.
so keep it cool !!!

One thing is though...... I swear this is NOT my xbox! lol
It has crayon markings on the side and I surely do not have crayons or kids.
But you keep your hard drive so it doesn't matter hat body / frame you get back.
